Like most other mid-tier VPNs, Zoog has some noteworthy benefits and certain drawbacks that need to be acknowledged, regardless of whether you plan on using its free version or one of its paid subscription plans.

Cons

  • Small server fleet

  • Sub-par device compatibility
  • No third-party auditing

4 Logging, Security & Privacy

Logging Details

ZoogVPN has a “zero logs” privacy policy and maintain that they are “not required to collect any [user data logs] by our jurisdiction.” This means that logging into and using ZoogVPN comes with little risk of your personal data (location, time stamps, browsing history, etc.) being used against you by the VPN or other third parties.

Encryption & Protocols

ZoogVPN employs a good assortment of protocols with various encryptions (both AES-256 and ChaCha20) to help keep user data encrypted and protected. On Windows, the VPN offers a choice between IKEv2, OpenVPN, WireGuard, Shadow, ZoogTLS, depending on what the user is looking for, be it security, speed, or privacy. On Android, iOS, macOS, Linux, and other platforms, the choice of protocols is a bit more limited, but on every platform, there is a choice of at least either WireGuard (speed) or OpenVPN (security) or OpenVPN and IKEv2.

3 Server Network & Speeds

ZoogVPN has a relatively moderate server fleet of just over 100 servers spread across 71 countries (though only a few servers in 3 different countries are available for free users). This means a limited choice, especially for people in South America and Africa, as well a bit of difficulties when wanting to use the VPN for unblocking geo-restricted content from specific countries.

ZoogVPN Server Locations

Speed-wise, however, ZoogVPN has performed pretty well in our testing, especially on its paid subscription plans. The free version was slower, as expected, but it has a 2GB data limit per month regardless, so it can’t be used for things, such as streaming, torrenting, or gaming anyway. With a paid subscription, however, ZoogVPN offers very good speeds when using close-by servers, especially for a mid-tier VPN, which is quite good.

2 Streaming

Despite its good server speeds, ZoogVPN isn’t all that good for streaming needs. In fact, this is arguably one of this VPN’s weakest areas, as it really struggles to unblock the geo-restrictions of most major streaming platforms out there.

Zoog does manage to work with Max, ITVX, and BBC iPlayer on a relatively consistent basis, and it occasionally gets through Netflix (US and UK), but not nearly often enough to be reliable. It also has issues with platforms, such as DAZN, Hulu, Sky Go, and others, with the free version also struggling with Disney+ and Prime Video. Overall, if streaming is a priority, there are much better VPNs for that out there.

4 Torrenting

Unlike streaming, torrenting with ZoogVPN is much smoother, as there is no need for “unblocking” anything. The VPN has several dozen servers with P2P support and it has good privacy tools and a kill switch to keep your data protected while torrenting. That, plus the good server speeds, makes this a good option if you want to torrent things through a VPN.

5 User Experience & Advertisements

ZoogVPN offers a relatively good user experience. Installing, logging into, and using the app on most devices is quite simple and straightforward, even for new users. The ZoogVPN website offers easy-to-follow tutorials too, and navigating the various protocol, server, and other features or setting menus is pretty easy.

The free version is accompanied by ads, of course, but they are not too overwhelming. Some of the more advanced uses of the VPN, such as installing it on a router, can be a bit too confusing for beginners, and using the app on iOS or macOS can be a bit buggy, but the overall user experience is good.

4 Support & Payment Methods

ZoogVPN has a 24/7 in-app chat support as well as an email support option, and the customer support is quite fast and efficienty. In terms of payment methods, ZoogVPN works with Visa, MasterCard, American Express, JCB, UnionPay, as well as GooglePay and ApplePay. Plus, in addition to having a free version, the paid version itself is also very affordable, with the more long-term plan being as cheap as under $2 a month. There is a 7-day money-back guarantee too.

ZoogVPN - Reddit Reviews

ZoogVPN, known for its budget-friendly pricing and streaming capabilities, has garnered mixed reviews from Reddit users. While some appreciate its affordability and ability to unblock streaming services, others express concerns about its security features, performance, and reliability.

Key Takeaways from Reddit Users

Streaming Capabilities and Performance

Many users commend ZoogVPN for its ability to access platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and BBC iPlayer. However, reports of inconsistent speeds, especially during peak hours, affect streaming quality.

“ZoogVPN’s ability to unblock streaming sites including Netflix, Hulu, and BBC iPlayer makes many users very happy. Although it operates most of the time, some servers could find it difficult to surpass limitations and hence call for users to relocate.”

Security Concerns and Kill Switch Functionality

Some users have raised alarms about the reliability of ZoogVPN’s kill switch feature, noting that it may not function as intended, potentially exposing user activity.

“When the client launches, if you have the kill switch already enabled, it properly cuts the network. But after that, if you try to connect to a server and it fails, or if it connects and then fails sometime later, or if you even purposefully disconnect, the client then ignores the kill switch and immediately reconnects to your normal network, thus leaking your activity.”

Malware Alerts and False Positives

There have been instances where ZoogVPN’s software was flagged as a potential threat by antivirus programs, leading to concerns about its safety. However, some community members suggest these detections might be false positives.

“WD got tons of false positives with multiple VPNs actually. Multiple AV actually got issues with marking VPN falsely.”

General Performance and Reliability

Some users describe ZoogVPN as slow and underdeveloped, advising potential users to consider more established VPN services.

“Nope, it’s slow and underdeveloped. Like most VPNs which offered or offer lifetime deals.”

Suggested Alternatives

Based on user feedback, here are some recommended VPN services:

  • Mullvad: Known for its strong privacy policies and reliable performance.
  • ProtonVPN: Offers robust security features and a strict no-logs policy.
  • IVPN: Emphasizes user privacy with transparent practices.
  • Surfshark: Provides a functional kill switch and responsive customer support.

Final Verdict & Alternatives

ZoogVPN is a solid mid-tier VPN that has been around for a long time but continues to be held back by one or two “problem areas,” namely its small server fleet and its poor stream-unblocking capabilities. It’s also lacking some additional features, such as RAM-only servers, port forwarding, or Tor over VPN, but has other nice features, such as a kill switch, obfuscation, P2P support, split tunneling, and others.

Overall, ZoogVPN can be a great and affordable option for many people, as long as its few problem areas aren’t a concern for your particular needs and VPN preferences. But, for those who want something both affordable and excellent in more or less all areas, a VPN like Surfshark does everything ZoogVPN does and doesn’t do for virtually the same price tag.

FAQs about ZoogVPN

Does ZoogVPN Work with Netflix?

Neither the free nor paid subscription plans of ZoogVPN had much success unblocking Netflix (US and UK) in our testing. There was the occasional success, but not often or consistent enough for us to recommend ZoogVPN for people who explicitly want to watch Netflix through a VPN

The VPN alsos struggled with Sky Go UK, Hulu, and DAZN, while the free version, in particular, also met problems with Prime Video and Disney+ (UK). So, if you’re looking for streaming with ZoogVPN, you’ll have issues with most major streaming platforms, except Max, BBC iPlayer, and ITVX.

Is ZoogVPN Good for Gaming?

While ZoogVPN is great for torrenting, its lackluster streaming performance can raise the very valid question of whether Zoog is good for gaming. The good news is that, with its good server speeds, ZoogVPN is quite good for gaming with little to now latency issues. The VPN’s relatively small server fleet of just over 100 servers worldwide can still be a concern if there are no servers in the locations you need, but if there are, gaming through ZoogVPN shouldn’t be much of a concern.

Is ZoogVPN Good for iOS and macOS?

ZoogVPN works on both iOS and macOS devices, albeit not as well as it does on Windows or Android. There are certain functionalities this VPN lacks on iOS and macOS, such as a kill switch on iOS and server obfuscation on both iOS and macOS. ZoogVPN also has fewer protocols on either operating system with Shadow and ZoogTLS protcols missing on both and WireGuard also missing on macOS.
